The possum, or opossum, is a scavenger, thanks to its adaptability and highly-effective immune system. There are over 100+ species of possum in the world, though the most common and recognizable is the Virginia opossum. If you suspect a possum in your home or yard, it’s crucial to understands the facts, first and foremost.

  • The average size of an opossum is 21-36” long; 4-15 lbs.
  • The average lifespan in the wild is 1-2 years; relatively short compared to many other pests
  • Identifying features include a cat-sized body, grey fur with a white face; pointed snout; round, dark eyes; hairless ears; long, hairless tail.
  • When threatened or harmed, possums tend to mimic the appearance and smell of a sick or dead animal. Their lips are drawn back, teeth bared, and saliva foams from the mouth.
  • Typically, possums prefer woodlands with nearby water sources – streams or swamps. They do not build dens and will take shelter in attics or man-made shelters.

Possum Prevention Tips

Without a doubt, preventing possums from entering your home or yard will save you plenty of trouble and money. There are a few precautionary measures you may take to block access. Keep in mind, possums are intelligent animals. It’s not easy to outwit these mischievous creatures, but some strategies may work, at least to an extent:

  • Keep your yard clean – Possums do not find clean areas attractive, so keeping a clean yard will discourage their advances
  • Take pet food indoors – Do not leave pet food or water bowls outside, especially at night
  • Remove potential shelters – Avoid wood piles, dry leaves, or stacks of accumulated materials in your yard.
  • Secure garbage lids – Like raccoons, possums love to get into trash cans for food. Keep lids tight and locked if possible.
  • Clear rotting fruit or vegetables – If you have a garden, do not leave rotting fruit or vegetables out.
